we are searching for approximately 10 dissidents scattered across the hills of Masuso. we were tasked to retrieved a laptop in their possession, possibly containing vital national security information.

i followed Gen. Mobios as he silently climbed a precipitous path between big boulders and tall grasses. fifteen or more comrades were right behind us doing the same steep undertaking. the upland is piled with boulders and thick bushes in between. with our rifles aimed to possible enemies, we scampered and crouch to nearby bushes and trees for possible concealment.

the upland seems to be peaceful except for the chirping sounds of the birds. not a sign of the enemies. we started to scout the vicinity less anxiously. they could be further among the boulders and slopes. but who would hide between the boulders in this scorching heat? aside from the boulders the area consist of ravine and small hills or mounds. hmm, i’m having second thoughts on the name of this place. to my left 10 meters away is a mound with short trees and thick bushes. looks like a good hiding place…

tatatatat… tatatatatatatatat… zing

two of my comrades scouting farther right were at once hit by the first salvo of gunfire. everybody was jumping for cover, and some others returning fire. the gunfire was indeed coming from the small trees covered mound.

three of us run crouch towards the mound. the enemy seems to be busy exchanging fire at our comrades farther right. now is our chance to stealth behind him. i crawled steeply by holding on the protruding roots of the bushes. 5 meters away i noticed a dark silhouette hidden by thick bushes and branches.

my rifle in semi automatic mode, aim, and pressed the trigger once. Bang!… uugh was the enemy’s short reply. i gave him another two quick burst to make sure he is welcome to oblivion…

if you’ve read this story before, i bet you will vividly recall the lesson it imparts the first time you’ve read it. the principle taught by the parable is so admonishing that it marks a promise in our hearts not to do the same. i’ve read it when i was in elementary in one of our reading books and until now when i came across it in the internet last week, i remember the story of “The Wooden Bowl.”

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about grandfather,” said the son. I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfather’s direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone.

Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” Just as sweetly, the boy responded, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

children are very keen observer. they will imitate good and bad attitudes that parents imparts. children will emulate the kindness and love that their parents gave them.

relationship with our parents are not perfect. it’s not too late to hug or tell them how much you loved them. you will miss them when they are gone from your life.

a warm hug, a shoulder embrace, a shoulder ride, a holding hands, a friendly pat, seat together, walk together, or a kiss. which of these have you expressed today to your children or parents?

remember, not the wooden bowl…

the occasion started solemnly with a Eucharistic celebration. after a 30 mins break the program started with a processional of the candidates. after some formalities, the opening remarks was given by the administrative officer Dr. Salvacion Gerona, followed by an inspirational message of the vice president for finance, Emerita Padua.

then the main event…

the capping of the 460 nurse candidates was done in groupings of ten (10). this proved to be more efficient in order to avoid an otherwise lengthy ceremony. afterwards, their lamps were lighted, candles actually, which is a symbolic gesture that epitomized the lady with the lamp, Florence Nightingale, her service and her role in founding the modern nursing profession. Florence set a shining example for nurses everywhere of compassion, commitment to patient care, and diligent and thoughtful hospital administration.

the program ended with the enthusiastic singing of their batch song “our lives” by the calling. the whole-hearted recital of the Nightingale’s Pledge and an instilling talk of the NCF President, Dr. Carlo Villanueva.

congratulations to all newly capped nurse candidates! congratulations to the NCF administrative staff and faculty! congratulations to the proud parents and relatives! congratulations to NCF on their 14th Capping & Candle Lighting Ceremony with the theme “Building a Tradition for Nursing Excellence.”

its a breather from the scorching heat from the past months. i just hope the coming rainy season won’t be so heavy to cause flooding or landslide in other regions.

streets were dug, culverts implanted, sewers fixed or built. ho hum… those are pre-election formalities. eventually, nature is going to test those in the coming rainy days…

today, nature had a calm sunrise. its cloudy. i think it would be moderately sunny throughout the day. thanks God it’s friday! the city seems not too busy today, after all the city just finished celebrating its 59th charter anniversary last monday.
